Sof Omar Cave

Sof Omar, is a  tiny Muslim village in the Bale region of Eastern Ethiopia, is the site of an amazing complex of natural caves, cut by the Web River as it flows underground through the limestone rocks of the region. The settlement, which is a religious site, is named after a local Sheikh. It is possible to include a visit to Sof Omar if travelling to the Bale Mountains National Park. Sof OmarSof Omar also  has an interesting weekly camel market.

It is possible to camp in the gorge near the cave entrance. There one can see an extraordinary number of arched portals, high, eroded ceilings and deep, echoing chambers. A journey through the cave following the underground river for more than a km is  quite an adventure.
